Prof. David A. Nethercot, UK
The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) awards Honorary Membership to Prof. David A. Nethercot, UK. The award is presented "in high appreciation of his outstanding and dedicated services to the Association". Prof. Fernando Branco, President of IABSE, will confer the Award on September 21, 2017, on occasion of the 39th IABSE Symposium in Vancouver (Sept. 21-23, 2017).
David Nethercot was for 12 years prior to his retirement in 2011, Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London; previously he was on the staff at Cardiff, Sheffield and Nottingham Universities, including 5 years as Department Head at Nottingham.
He was awarded a DSc degree in 1993 and elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering in the same year.
David is a Past President of the Institution of Structural Engineers and a former Council Member of the Royal Academy of Engineering. In 2006 he was awarded an OBE for services to Structural Engineering. He received the IStructE's Gold Medal in 2009 and was elected a Foreign Fellow of the Academy of Technical Sciences and Engineering of Australia in the following year and a Foreign Member of the National Academy of Engineering of the USA, five years later.
David has 50 years' experience of teaching, research and specialist advisory work on major projects, principally in the field of steel construction. He is the author of more than 400 research papers as well as textbooks and design guides and has addressed conferences in some 50 countries worldwide.
David Nethercot has been one of the pillars of the worldwide structural engineering community for years, including within IABSE where his leadership and example has been an inspiration to many. David joined IABSE in 1986. He has been a member and Chair of WC 2 (1989-1999), a member of the Outstanding Paper Committee (1991-1992), a member then the Chair of the Technical Committee (1995-2005). He was the Chair of the British Group for many years (1997-2013) and has been a Vice President and member of Admin Committee and Executive Committee (2005-2013). He has served as a member on several Scientific Committees of IABSE conferences and was the Chair of the Scientific Committee for the IABSE-IASS London Symposium in 2011. During his term as President (2013-2016) he was actively involved in the implementation of the new IABSE Strategy for the rejuvenisation of the Association and saw the successful organisation of four IABSE Conferences. He is currently a member of the Strategy Group, a member of the SEI Advisory Board and a Delegate to the Permanent Committee
