IABSE Awards 2019
The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) is pleased to announce the Laureates of the IABSE Awards 2019. The President of IABSE, Fernando Branco, will present the awards on the occasion of the IABSE’s Congress in New York City, which will be held during the ‘Opening Ceremony’ on September 4, 2019.
THE IABSE PRIZE
The IABSE Prize, was established to honour and encourage a member early in his or her career for an outstanding achievement in structural engineering. The Award is conferred on an individual member, forty years of age or younger. The Prize includes a prize money and registration to the IABSE Conference where the Award Presentation is held. The first IABSE Prize was presented in 1983.
The IABSE Prize 2019 is presented to Dr. Robert Hällmark, Sweden, ‘for his expertise gained while working as a bridge owner', specialist, designer and researcher—contributing to his brilliant career and achievements in the field of structural engineering.’
Robert Hällmark has a background as a bridge designer, researcher and as a steel bridge specialist. Currently, he is working as a bridge specialist at the Swedish Transport Administration (STA), since 2013. As a client and bridge specialist, he has been working mainly with steel bridge projects and steel design issues in the design codes. One example of a larger bridge project is the rehabilitation of the Old Årsta Bridge (2014-2015) a double tracked truss-arch railway bridge from 1929 in the center of Stockholm, where Robert worked on the client side as a bridge specialist. Before he started working for STA, he was a bridge designer at Ramboll, for eight years, and a part of a team responsible for designing several advanced steel and steel-concrete composite bridges. He has experiences from designing various types of bridge structures, such as steel-composite girder bridges, truss bridges, arch-bridges, movable bridges etc. Example of projects as designer are a double track movable railway bridge outside Södertälje (2007-2008), the structural design of more than 1000 m of steel-box-girders for the Partihall Bridge in Gothenburg (2008-2009), the design of two 190 m long steel box-girder bridges launched without traffic interruptions over a six-lane motorway outside Stockholm (2011).
After finishing his civil engineering education at Luleå University of Technology (LTU), Robert has been working in the bridge industry, but he has never stopped doing research for LTU. As a researcher he has been taking part in three European R&D projects concerning integral bridges, prefabricated composite bridge structures and post-installed shear connectors. The research has so far resulted in a Doctoral degree in structural engineering as well as several research papers.
Dr. Hällmark also helped in organising several European IABSE workshops held in Stockholm on steel/composite bridges, with designers, researchers and bridge owners participating from several countries.
International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE)
The mission of IABSE is to exchange knowledge and to advance the practice of structural engineering worldwide in the service of the profession and society. To fulfil its mission, IABSE organises conferences and publishes a high quality journal, Structural Engineering International (SEI); publishes books reflecting the work of its Technical Groups; creates Task Groups, as required by new needs and technological progress; offers activities within National Groups of IABSE; supports Young Engineers with a programme, and presents annual Awards in recognition of outstanding achievements in structural engineering.
