IABSE Awards 2020

The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) is pleased to announce the Laureates of the IABSE Awards 2020.


Honorary Membership

This exceptional award is an expression of IABSE’s high appreciation of a member’s dedicated service rendered to IABSE over several years, and the great contributions the member has made to the Association. 


Honorary Membership 2020 is presented to Professor Dr. Ekasit Limsuwan, Thailand; ‘in high appreciation of his outstanding and dedicated services to the Association.’


Ekasit Limsuwan, acquired his B.Eng. from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, his MSCE from the University of Houston, U.S.A, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas, US. Ekasit Limsuwan has made tremendous contributions to the development of structural engineering practice and construction technology in Thailand and has thus contributed to IABSE with his knowledge, time, several responsibilities and his expertise. Throughout his career, he has combined academic research, teaching, and design practice in several aspects of civil/structural engineering and construction techniques. He was a Professor in the Chulalongkorn University from 1980 till 2010 for the subjects dealing with high strength and high-performance concrete and post-tensioned flat slab, prefabrication construction.


Ekasit Limsuwan has served as the Chair of the Thai Group of IABSE since 1982 until 2018, he was the Vice President of IABSE from 1998 to 2004, during which he helped organise two major IABSE events, the 1999 IABSE Colloquium in Phuket and the 2009 IABSE Symposium in Bangkok. He has been a member of the Advisory Board to the Executive Committee of IABSE, Member of the Working Commission 7, and in several Scientific Committees, for IABSE conferences.


In other associations, he has been in the Executive Committee of Asia Concrete Federation Committee ACF; Thailand Chapter President of the ACI from 1993-1998; and Vice President of the International Committee on Asian Concrete Model Code from 1998 – 2004. From 1980 till 2010, in Thailand he contributed to the structural designing of several concrete high-rise buildings; from 1998-2002 he contributed to the construction of the landmark Suvarnabhumi Airport; from 2009-2011 he contributed to the assessment of the Rama IX Bridge; from 2018-2019 he contributed with his expertise to the U-Tapao Airport, amongst others. During his entire career as a structural engineer, he has tried to bring into IABSE his expertise, his time and his commitment, for the betterment of the Association and its mission.




The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) founded in 1929, operates on a worldwide basis and deals with all aspects of planning, design, construction, maintenance and repair of civil engineering structures. The mission of IABSE is to exchange knowledge and to advance the practice of structural engineering worldwide in the service of the profession and society. To fulfil its mission, IABSE organises conferences and publishes a high-quality journal, Structural Engineering International (SEI); publishes books reflecting the work of its Technical Groups; creates Working Groups, as required by new needs and technological progress; offers activities within National Groups of IABSE; supports Young Engineers with a programme, and presents annual Awards in recognition.
