Project Description:

‘Al Nehem’, an approximately 30m long and 20t artwork representing a whale shark suspended from the surrounding Lusail towers 20m above the main promenade, was installed as a part of the celebrations in the city of Lusail, coinciding with the country's hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™️.

Judges Comments

Suspending a large sculpture between two tall buildings demands sensitivity, a lightweight design approach and a careful consideration of wind loading, particularly as the buildings themselves affect the windspeed experienced by the sculpture. This 30m long whale shark sculpture has an internal steel frame clad with perforated stainless-steel sheets and rebar. The anchorages of the suspending cables demanded local modifications to the building façade and special attachment details to safely transmit the loads and permit future removal.
