Message from the Chairs, Organising & Scientific Committee

On behalf of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) we take great pleasure to invite you to Guwahati, India, for the IABSE Symposium on the main theme “Structural Failures - Causes, Investigation, Resilience, Mitigation & Standardization” from 22nd April (Thursday) to 24th April (Saturday), 2027. The Symposium is organized by the Indian National Group of the IABSE and the Symposium will take place at the Mayfair Spring Valley Resort, Guwahati.

The main goal of the Symposium is to create a forum for the debate on structural failures around the globe, focusing on forensic investigation & diagnosis, analyzing the root causes of collapses; brainstorming preventive methodologies & mitigation by developing strategies and methods to avoid failures during the entire life cycle of a structure, including in-service monitoring; reviewing how forensic studies should influence the development of building codes and the professional standard of care for engineers; analyzing the role of human error, including mistakes in design, construction, and maintenance, which constitute a high percentage of failures, rather than just random events; and addressing failures that occur during construction. The symposium will bridge the gap between engineering theory and practice, addressing both technical and organizational, social, and environmental causes of failures.

We invite the world’s engineering fraternity, leading scientists, academicians, industry professionals, eminent speakers, and forensic structural engineering experts to one platform to share their experiences with their colleagues and friends to have unique open discussions and Forums on what the future holds for our future generations. Consultants, Planners, Contractors, Owners, Architects, Associated Experts, Researchers and Practitioners will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences on planning, structural design, construction and maintenance issues, future growth and sustainability.

We hope that this IABSE Symposium Guwahati 2027 will be an important international event for all those associated with different types of structures above and below the ground. Technical visits to interesting projects and to research facilities are planned during the Symposium, and are open for accompanying persons. More detailed information will be available in Final Invitation & at the Symposium website: www.iabse.org/Guwahati2027.

We warmly welcome you to join us in Guwahati, the largest city in the Indian state of Assam and the vibrant metropolis of northeastern India, for the IABSE Symposium Guwahati 2027.

The Indian National Group of IABSE takes immense pleasure in inviting the international structural engineering community to join us at the IABSE Symposium 2027 in Guwahati, Assam (India). The theme of the Symposium, “Structural Failures – Causes, Investigation, Resilience, Mitigation & Standardisation, serves as a clarion call for all engineers to come together, young and curious as well as ambitious and experienced.

The aim of the symposium is to provide a unique platform for sharing knowledge and research on structural failures, promoting the development of more reliable and resilient structures, as well as sharing knowledge on techniques for strengthening, repairs and renovation of failed structures. There will be opportunities to learn from the experience of others on failures.
