Bolintxu Viaducts, Spain Project Description: Bolintxu viaducts are both integrated and elegant structures, fully respectful with the sensitive environment of the valley they cross, which was preserved from the very first decisions throughout the whole construction. The use of a pioneering composite weathering steel/concrete (C60) arch section also implies a long-term sustainable design, for its excellent durability and maintenance performance. Judges Comments These twin elegant, slender steel arch bridges were constructed by assembling the pairs of arch ribs vertically, standing on the abutments, and then lowering them together into position. This avoided occupation of the sensitive valley floor during construction. The shallow profile with a span to rise ratio of 11, and the slender proportions of the arch are achieved by filling the twin steel box ribs with high strength self-compacting concrete.
