Outstanding Structure Award (OStrA) for Building or Other Structure category 2021 is presented to the Beijing Daxing International Airport Terminal, China, ‘Beautiful and unique combination of architecture and structural engineering that seamlessly integrates seismic and vibration control into the design.

 

Beijing Daxing International Airport Terminal (BDIAT) has been named as the top of the New Seven Wonders by the Guardian. The 8 C-shaped columns in the central area of the terminal are organically combined with the roof structure to achieve the amazingly architectural effect. The new base-interlayer isolation technology is proposed to build the world's largest seismic-isolation building which also becomes a new benchmark of isolated structure. This terminal is the first completed project in the world that integrated high-speed rail transit and terminal, and vibration caused by high-speed trains is also controlled to an acceptable level. The BDIAT is located in the Daxing district of Beijing. The terminal is 996 m long from North to South and 1144m wide from east to west. The floor of this terminal is around 800,000m2 with a direct roof projection area of 350,000m2. It is the world’s largest airport terminal. The Beijing Daxing International Airport Terminal is a unique structure with high architectural quality both with respect to the exterior and interior, both from distance and in the details. This is a very unique engineered structure and a very significant collaboration between the architect Zaha Hadid and the engineering team. The main innovations of the project include: The combined supporting system formed by C-shaped columns and supporting cores, and the arch shell structure, support the large-span roof of 180,000m2 together; the new base-interlayer isolation technology is adopted in the central area (545mx445m) of BDIAT, which is composed of 1152 isolation bearings and 160 sets of dampers; an integrated solution for vibration analysis and control is proposed to ensure structural safety and passenger comfort in BDIAT when high speed trains are passing; a series of techniques for the construction of complex space structure is adopted in BDIAT has realized the amazing architectural effect, efficiently.
