Project Description:
The modern and sleek design of a new 104m long pedestrian, cycle bridge across the River Shannon is a vital link in the EuroVelo Route 2 Galway to Dublin Cycleway. The scheme was configured to act as a landmark structure, and a beacon for eco-tourism and patrons of active travel.
Judges Comments
This elegant 2-span bridge over the River Shannon stands at a site of important historical interest, and the designers chose a simple minimalist approach to avoid visual conflict with the adjacent buildings. The slender, tapering steel box girder responds perfectly to its setting. Predicted dynamic responses demanded the addition of internal ballast concrete to control vibrations, and an innovative approach to the use of small diameter steel piles minimised disturbance and negative impacts in the river.
