The Scientific Committee invites you to join us for the now online IABSE Symposium “Synergy of Culture and Civil Engineering – History and Challenges” which will be held on October 7-9, 2020.


The Scientific Committee, has prepared an interesting technical programme, including Keynote, Plenary and Parallel Sessions. It has accepted over 150 papers for presentation on the Symposium themes: Civil Engineering Structures as Monuments of Culture and Technical Development; Condition Assessment of Contemporary and Historical Structures; Conservation, Upgrading and Management of Contemporary and Historical Structures as well as the Future of Civil Engineering Structures.


We would like to thank all members of the Scientific Committee for preparing the technical programme of this Symposium, and also present our gratitude to all members of the Organising Committee for arranging all Symposium activities.

Symposium Proceedings

The Symposium proceedings will be available in electronic format (ePDF via link) at the beginning of the Symposium. Note that authors must register to the Symposium by June 15. 2020, in order to have their paper published in the proceedings. IABSE Conference Reports are abstracted and indexed under Scopus.

Young Engineers Programme

Delegates born in 1986 or later enjoy reduced registration fees. In addition, a jury presents the Young Engineers’ Contribution Award to two young authors, born in or after 1986, who have personally presented their paper during the Symposium. The prize is sponsored by the IABSE Fellows and the Organising Committee. These awards consisting of financial prizes are presented at the closing of the Symposium.


Post Symposium Update - Young Engineer's Contribution Award - Results:

We are pleased to inform that 33 papers among of 134 papers qualified to be published in the Symposium Proceedings were prepared and presented by Young Engineers. From these excellent group of contributions two Young Authors were awarded: 




The financial prizes and certificates were presented in the Closing Ceremony of the Symposium.
Contributions and presentations delivered by Young Engineers during the IABSE Symposium Wrocław 2020 were highly appreciated by the Jury of the Young Engineers’ Contribution Award Competition. Congratulations to the Winners!

Young Engineers’ Contribution Award Members


The Organisers had originally prepared a great attraction for Young Engineers – a parallel event to the IABSE Symposium Wrocław 2020, International Steel Bridges Competition, ISBC 2020. The topic of this year’s edition was “Suspension Bridges”. The Competition is organised according to the general formula “Design–Build–Test it!”. The idea of organising both events in parallel was to promote the IABSE’s mission among young people, to invite young engineers to participate in the IABSE conferences and to encourage the young generation to become members of the Association. More about the principles and outcomes of the Competition can be read in the August issue article available below (click on the image to download).


ISBC 2020 will finally not be organised this year due to Covid-19, but the OC is organising another attraction for Young Engineers: “VIRTUAL BRIDGES” Competition. Please read more on this below.







"Virtual Bridges" Competition

We would like to announce a new attraction within the Young Engineers Programme of the IABSE Symposium Wrocław 2020. We are happy to inform that we are now organising the “VIRTUAL BRIDGES” Competition replacing the originally planned “International Steel Bridge Competition” .


Participation in the “Virtual Bridges” Competition is for Young Engineers born in 1986 or later and cost-FREE. We will PLAN, CONSTRUCT & TEST various kinds of virtual bridges. The Competition will be organised as a game, which will be played via internet. No special preparation or training is required. If you are a Young Engineer make sure that you join this Online Competition and have a lot of fun with us!


30 Online Players may attend the Competition. Awards are foreseen! The Bridge-Design-Tournament day will be October 7, 2020. It will be organised within the Young Engineers Programme Evening “Meeting of Generations”. The ZOOM Platform will be used to meet each other, to participate or to observe the Contest. Should you be interested, send your application to participate to the Symposium Secretary, Olga Szymczyk: and to the Co-Supervisor of “Young Bridge Builders”, Marco Teichgraeber: Your education status (student / PhD student / graduate) and affiliation should be included, as well as your age must be confirmed in the application!


The Young Engineers Programme Team together with the “Young Bridge Builders” invite all Young Engineers interested in bridge construction to participate in the “Virtual Bridges” Competition, as well as the more experienced generation of engineers to meet in the virtual world and to watch the Contest.
