Bridge Erection Technology: Experts Speak (Webinar Series) - IABSE Finnish Group Event on Second Generation Eurocodes 3-June-2021.

This online event was organised together with Finnish Association of Civil Engineers RIL, and attracted 38 participants. It was targeted to be informal, and included speakers from the UK and Finland. Steve Denton, Chairman CEN/TC250, gave overview of the 2nd generation of the Eurocodes. The related project, conducted by European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is targeted to be ready 2026. It covers about 5000 pages of new standards, and will affect about half million engineers in 34 countries. Mungo Stacy, involved in two subcommittees and horizontal review groups, highlighted changes in present and new bridge standards. Mariapia Angelino presented the technical review process of the new codes. Followed by these European-level contributions, the discussions were moved to Finnish viewpoints, with Heikki Lilja and Joonas Tulonen describing the application on civil engineering structures in Finland. Atte Mikkonen and Risto Kiviluoma gave expert observations on the standards related to steel tension components and wind effects, respectively. The ongoing Kirjalansalmi Bridge project was referred to, as a case example. During the discussions, enhancement of design guidance to robustness and analysis of existing structures were addressed. Also, the application and scope related to special type bridges were discussed. The event was moderated by Risto Kiviluoma, Chair of the Finnish Group.
