Building Construct Event

The Romanian Group of IABSE co-organised the the “Building Construct” competition on 22 May 2024. "Building Construct" is a competition which encourages the practical use of building materials and is addressed to first year students in the Civil Engineering and Building Services Engineering branch of the Politehnica University Timisoara. The main goal of the competition is the enhancement of the participants’ knowledge related to building materials, and facilitates the formation of a solid foundation on which new skills can be easily gathered in the coming years. 

Team members are expected to boost their creativity and cooperation skills, while at the same time gain insight at the new trends and challenges of the building material sector. Teams of about 10-to-15 students are formed on a voluntary basis. For this event, 16 teams with a total number of 250 students participated at the competition. Traditionally, the teams design and develop their own products, models or new materials using different types of building materials.

The year 2024 brings a change in the competition. The teams were also expected to carry out studies in the form of scientific papers or prototypes addressing topics in the field of modern building materials.

The competition had two parts:

Part I – Conducting the research

During the study of approximately two months, the students were supervised and coordinated by: the Building Materials teachers (teachers), OSTL students (student tutors) as well as by experts in the building material field.

Part II – Presenting the study

Each team presented its study in a conference where a Jury had the opportunity to vote for the team that came up with the most interesting project and had the best presentation.
