Seoul is a historically cultural city, and serves as the capital of South Korea. The country has experienced 30-year golden age for infrastructure development not only in domestic construction of cable-supported bridges but also for international involvement of several famous long-span bridges. Based on the infrastructure construction and operation, resilience and sustainability become the key issues related to various uncertainties and risks.
It is just perfect that the Korean Group of IABSE has selected “Risk Intelligence of Infrastructures” as the theme for our IABSE Conference Seoul 2020 since the title focuses on uncertainties and risks in the infrastructure development of Korea. Furthermore, artificial intelligence and big-data are of course much more important than ever before. The conference theme will be undertaken by the specific topics of risk analysis, multi-hazard assessment, data intelligence and field informatics.
IABSE has held several international events in Korea, in particular in Seoul, including IABSE Conference 2001 and Congress 2012. This will be the third time that Seoul hosts an IABSE conference.
I congratulate the Organizers for swiftly changing this well-prepared conference from a classical to a hybrid conference format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We shall participate in both live streaming or pre-recorded presentations offered and live Q&A via moderated chat, and last but not least we shall enjoy an online Technical Tour featuring the ‘Goduk Bridge’ a concrete cable-stayed structure with a main span of 540m currently under construction in Seoul.
I am looking forward to meeting our members online and to welcoming new friends to the IABSE community
