Task Group 3.9

Dual-functional electromagnetic damper with energy harvesting

Mission Statement/Objectives
To explore the feasibility and potential applications of Dual-Functional Electromagnetic Dampers (with functionality of Energy Harvesting & Semi-active Vibration Control & Structural Health Monitoring), especially in the context of vibration control of off-shore wind turbines. Other possible application will also be discussed and explored.

Scope & Limitation

The focus of the Task Group is to find a practical application scenario of the electromagnetic damper using stepper motor based on its characteristics. Check the possible self-sufficient semi-active control using electromagnetic damper in the application of a wind turbine.

At the first stage of this task group, the investigation is first limited to the feasibility study of this system in application of wind turbine or other direction.

Expected Project Output
The investigation is planned to be presented in the IABSE SYMPOSIUM TOKYO 2025.

Start Date: 1 June 2024
Target Date of Completion: First stage of the task group will be completed after IABSE SYMPOSIUM TOKYO 2025.
