Nansha Tri-Directional Arch Pedestrian Bridge, China

Project Description:

Nansha Tri-directional Arch Pedestrian Bridge spans the T-shaped estuary with an ultra-low rise-span ratio and large span steel structure. Innovatively designed with tensioning technology on soft soil, it's loved by locals. Using FEA, eco-materials, and BIM, the team reduced emissions and promoted holistic management.

Judges Comments

This three-way bridge acts as a very flat arch which is made possible by the end fixity arrangements at the abutments which introduce significant bending stiffness and horizontal restraint. The elegant solution is a steel box girder structure, with a partial roof which contributes towards the overall structural behaviour in some places. An ingenious construction sequence was devised as part of the design to enable the structure to behave as intended.
