Štvanice Footbridge, Czech Republic

Project Description:

The gentle spatial curve of the footbridge is constructed as a smooth path based on the dynamics of pedestrian and cyclist movement. The construction of the bridge humbly responds to the panorama of Prague, to the connection to the Holešovice and Karlín banks, as well as to the connection of Štvanice island.

Judges Comments

This is an excellent example of the use of UHPFRC in a long footbridge. The simplicity of the constant depth H-shaped cross section and the gentle curved alignment is a bold architectural statement, particularly standing as it does in the centre of the historic city of Prague. The girder is formed from 57 precast elements, with joints at points of contraflexure, and is post-tensioned longitudinally. The whole ensemble is crowned with an elegant bronze handrail throughout.
