New Boca del Cerro Bridge, Mexico

Project Description:

The new Boca del Cerro bridge is a 160 meter-span railway composite truss designed to merge with the stunning landscape and not to compete with the historical arch bridge next to which it was built. The truss was erected with an innovative cantilevered construction process that avoided affecting Usumacinta River.

Judges Comments

Building immediately alongside an existing landmark bridge is always a challenge, and this simple arched truss structure has managed it well. The steel truss structure is integral with large concrete side span abutments on each side and has been designed to reflect and respond to the existing trussed arch alongside so that together they form a related pair. Construction was by cantilever construction from both sides, placing prefabricated truss elements using travelling derrick cranes.
