Skuru Bridge, Sweden Project Description: Kontrapunkt is designed as a visually uncomplicated structure, forming part of a harmonic ensemble of bridges. The bridge stands with its beautiful interior and a refined design language in a clear relationship to the existing structures - and yet with an independent dignity. The column division creates both interaction and contrast and the two generations is meant to coexist visually and conceptually.
Judges Comments This elegant new bridge stands immediately alongside an existing iconic concrete arch structure as a crisp and modern intervention that respects its historical setting. The slender twin steel box superstructure is supported on Y-shaped piers in a manner “like a waiter carries a tray”, according to the design competition judges. The complex doubly curved geometry and difficult site conditions added extra challenges to the project.
