Comprehensive reconstruction of the Széchenyi lánchíd (Chain Bridge), Hungary

Project Description:

The 175 years old Chain Bridge is an iconic landmark of Hungary. The 2021-2023 comprehensive reconstruction was its first major refurbishment since World War II. With the required structural and monumental upgrades, eg. replacing the old roadway but keeping and repairing the bridge's main elements, its lifespan was significantly extended.

Judges Comments

This world-famous suspension bridge over the Danube in Budapest has had a chequered history since opening in 1849. The original cast-iron structure was strengthened in 1914 and then destroyed during WW2. Since its reconstruction in 1949 and renovation in the 1990’s, it had deteriorated to a very poor state and required extensive repair and refurbishment. The work has been carried out with sensitivity to the heritage value of the bridge and a commitment to sustainability in all aspects of the project.
