Novel Strengthening Concept for Grandstand on Brøndby Stadium, Denmark

Project Description:

Grandstand structures from 1992 rehabilitated to sustain in-creased rhythmic pedestrian loading from coordinated jumping by novel strengthening concept through interconnection of structural elements to improve dynamic load-structure interac-tion properties, with dynamic load model by smart monitoring (smartphone accelerometers and DIC with GoPro cameras) and largescale load testing with 350 people.

Judges Comments

This 1992 grandstand structure had suffered badly from dynamic excitation by crowds jumping rhythmically in phase with the structure’s natural frequency. To prevent excessive dynamic responses, strengthening has been installed consisting of carefully targeted stiffening to modify the dynamic properties, without significantly affecting static behaviour, and also the provision of added damping. Installation of a monitoring system helped to accurately determine the behaviour and minimise the amount of strengthening required.
