This historic masonry arch bridge suffered significant damage in July 2018 due to the abrupt settlement of one of its piers. The proposal for restoring the structure involved the use of a temporary overhead steel truss spanning between the adjacent piers to support the masonry while it was dismantled and reconstructed. This ingenious method also maintained pedestrian use of the bridge during the works. The failed pier was underpinned and the arches rebuilt using as much of the original masonry as possible.
